Composition Series I

"Composition I," in a series of neon art, sculpture
Composition I
48" x 32" x 4"
translucent-painted aluminum, glass lenses, neon

(artist's collection)

Beginning the Composition Series in 1995, Ehlenberger has repeatedly come back to this style of work, one of his favorite. Influenced by Kandinsky's and Miro's work early in his education, the artist reflects on the relationship of color and form as reduced to basic geometric forms.

Through the use of simple arcs interacting with geometric shapes, the artist creates a dynamic tension between the action suggested by the arcs and the stability represented in the geometric forms. This dynamic tension is further enhanced with the use of luminous color, establishing a precarious balance of the elements in the sculptures.
